Tet - New Year Festival 2013
Today is the third day of Tet, the festival celebrating the beginning of the new year. According to the lunar calendar, this is going to be the year of the snake. Tet is the most important Vietnamese holiday and is being celebrated from the 9th to the 12th of February as determined by the Chinese lunar calendar. For these days, most people stay at home and celebrate Tet by having festive food with their close families. Others visit temples, so that the roads are mostly deserted, even in big cities such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
Travelers should therefore be prepared: for the duration of Tet, many stores, shops and restaurants will be closed so that workers can be with their families. Public transport is usually fully booked or quite >crowded and the prices for hotels and other services rise sharply.
